Tim Zoo leads VIC Charge

Tim Zoo and his Victorian counterparts – Mepunga Reward, Gambella and Deadly Avenger tackle the rich Group 1 Brisbane Cup on Saturday night.

The Jason Thompson-trained Tim Zoo gapped his Brisbane Cup heat field with ease, showcasing his pure speed and natural strength in his 29.22 second, best-of-the-night heat win.

“He is racing with this air of confidence at the moment, and I don’t think it is a stretch to say he is in career best form,” RSN Grey Areas co-host George Farrugia said.

“He has drawn well in the final in box three, and I think he is going to be very tough to beat.”

Tim Zoo holds the second and third fastest times recorded over the 520 metres at Q2 Parklands behind fellow Brisbane Cup contender and local Blue Blend (29.16 seconds) who has drawn box one.

Tim Zoo wins his Brisbane Cup heat from box six.

A win in this year’s Brisbane Cup for Thompson would mark a record breaking sixth Brisbane Cup title for the elite conditioner.

Victorians who sit outside the top five times run at Q2 Parklands are Mepunga Reward (7th) and Gambella (11th). Both greyhounds won Brisbane Cup heats last week and qualified for the final.

Mepunga Reward and Tim Zoo have had some epic battles on Queensland soil recently which have resulted in a win apiece. Tim Zoo edges ahead when times are considered – he holds a 29.21 second personal best, with Mepunga Reward three and a half lengths behind at 29.42 seconds.

Gambella picked up her second win of her Queensland campaign with trainer Anthony Azzopardi in a heat of the Brisbane Cup.

She had to work hard in her heat after an eye-to-eye battle with fellow quality Victorian Excavation. She has drawn box seven in the final.

Sandgroper winner Deadly Avenger concludes our chances, jumping from box eight. He finished second to Daysea’s Rory in their heat.

Gambella wins her Brisbane Cup heat from box one.

The Group 1 Brisbane Cup is Race 8 at Q2 Parklands.

Team Dailly and Ethanol Water are the soul Victorian representatives for the Queensland Cup (710 metres) – Race 7.
