Big Energy’s breeder Michelle Romer joined Grey Areas

Wednesday’s edition of RSN’s Grey Areas was highlighted by special guest Michelle Romer, breeder of Sportsbet Melbourne Cup contender Big Energy hailing from West Australia.

It’s not her first rodeo in a Melbourne Cup, in addition to Big Energy last year she’s had Notorious Mac and West On Augie line up in the 2018 edition.

“There’s so many of us invited. We can’t wait to get over there on Saturday and soak up the atmosphere. I wasn’t able to go last year and when Notorious Mac and West On Augie were in it I couldn’t get to go either. Hopefully it’s third time lucky!” said Romer on Grey Areas.

Big Energy, or ‘Benny’ as he’s known, is one of four greyhounds in the Cup with WA connections. Sunset Frazier, Miss Envy and Buddy Monelli are the others.

“It’s been a WA team effort really (with Big Energy). Andrew McLaren reared the litter and Michael Hines pre-trained them.”

Big Energy‘s grand-dam Te Amo has been just as good off the track as she was on it. Although she’s no longer with us, she still plays a strong role in Romer’s life.

“She’s my little miracle. I have her ashes in an urn. When I’m at home and any of her kids are in races she sits there with me.”

Aside from her involvement in greyhounds, Michelle had a professional career in dancing and singing.

Catch up on Wednesday’s show below – then set the alarm for midday on Friday for the next edition of Grey Areas on RSN.
