Aaron Bain Racing & Summit Bloodstock have announced that they will be partnering with Golden Easter Egg winner, Mackenna, in this year’s edition of the world’s richest greyhound race.
Having been involved in slot races across multiple codes including The Eureka, The Nullarbor, The Sandgroper and The Race (NZ), the ABR & Summit Bloodstock team are changing tact with their selection process.
“Going early hasn’t been our usual technique in slot races, but when the opportunity to lock in Mackenna presented itself, the fit was too perfect for us to not align ourselves with her.” said Aaron Bain.
“She is the current joint favourite for the race and is proven in big races having won the Easter Egg earlier this year”.
The announcement caps a big week for Aaron Bain Racing & Summit Bloodstock who had a Group 1 Harness racing treble at Melton on Saturday night with Heza Punk Rocker, Ivseenheavenslight and Showsomejoy all taking out editions of the Vicbred Super Series.
The lightly raced daughter of Whiskey Riot is unbeaten at The Broadmeadows circuit from five attempts, including at her most recent racetrack performance, a 29.82 best of the night win.
Purchased prior to her successful Easter Egg campaign by George Alvaro, “Bonnie” has spent time in NSW being prepared by Michelle Sultana & Daryl Thomas but will remain in Victoria in the build up to The Phoenix with trainer Paul Abela eyeing off some of the biggest races on the calendar.
“She is back in work now, but we will build her fitness back up slowly before making any decisions on races like The Topgun & The Melbourne Cup” Abela said.
“Everything we do with her from now will be tailored towards having her ready for The Phoenix (on December 21)”.
While Mackenna will be Paul Abela’s first foray into training a Phoenix contender, he is an unabashed fan of the format and the race itself.
“I have been on course for every edition, I have been at the box draw events and to have a runner in this race, I am pinching myself.
“The Phoenix truly is the best race on the calendar.”
