Magical Mackenna!

Victoria had three Golden Easter Egg heat winners – Mackenna, Tim Zoo and Smooth Plane – at Wentworth Park on Easter Saturday.

But nothing was more electrifying than the win of X-factor speedster Mackenna, who ‘challenged the clock’ in a scintillating 29.20sec – the second-fastest 520-metre time ever on the Glebe circuit.

Under the guidance of caretaker trainer Michelle Sultana for her Golden Easter Egg campaign, Mackenna was around two lengths off the incredulous 29.07sec track record set by Shakey Jakey with a 22.25L romp in a Magic Maiden heat on April 6, 2014. Amazingly, it was his one and only start!

Mackenna (Dec ’21 Whiskey Riot x Alcyone) was having her first start in 33 days. She had posted a near-record 24.89sec victory in a Matchmakers heat (450m) at Shepparton on February 26.

So, no surprise it prompted schools of thought from greyhound racing aficionados that Mackenna (10 wins from 15 starts) – recently purchased by Sydney businessman Giorgio Alvaro for a reported six-figure sum – could become the first greyhound to crack the magical 29-second barrier at Wenty… Scary stuff!

“It’s exciting but scary… She’s a true professional this dog; she does nothing wrong.”

“We’re stoked,” Sultana told thedogs.com.au post-race. “We just needed her to come out and not get touched. “She just had to be left alone and let her do her thing.

Mackenna has drawn awkwardly in box six for Semi-final 4 (Race 8, 8.53pm) of the Golden Easter Egg on Saturday night. However, she’s been installed $2.10F by Sportsbet and is also $5 ‘All In’ favourite for the $250,000 to-the-winner final on April 13.

Meanwhile, Tim Zoo (Box 3) – trained by Jason Thompson – is $2.35F to take out Semi-final 2 (Race 6, 8.05pm). He’s on the equal second line of nominal betting, along with NSW stars Nangar Larry and Zipping Megatron, at $8.

Tim Zoo (16 wins from 29 starts) – reigning G1 Australian Cup hero and G2 Warragul Cup winner – semaphored a 29.59sec ‘Egg’ heat win. He’s won eight of his past 11 starts.

And Smooth Plane (Box 4) – prepared by Tom Dailly – is $3.90F in Semi-final 1 (Race 5, 7.47pm). He’s $12 on the ‘All In’ market.

Smooth Plane (11 wins from 31 starts) – recently runner-up in the G2 Shepparton Cup and a finalist in last year’s G1 Silver Chief – registered a 29.57sec ‘Egg’ heat success.

Dailly also has Shima Current (Box 5) – fourth in his heat – in Semi-final 4.

Other Victorians still in the series are G1 Australian Cup runner-up and Phoenix victor Schillaci (Box 7) and G2 Bulli Gold Cup third placegetter Swindled (Box 6) – both in Semi-final 3 (Race 7, 8.29pm) – and Garry Stun On (Box 1) in Semi-final 2.
