The Restorative Power of the Noble Breed…

The calmative temperament of the greyhound is well documented. The excel at ‘just going quietly about their business’. No fuss, no surprises. They lap up the attention like the noble breed they are.

There’s no doubt they understand their role. Be loved, sleep, be patted, be fed, short walk, sleep, repeat.

One greyhound made a very special connection in a Wangaratta nursing home recently. Five-year-old retired Polly – race name Lightning Blue – was introduced to the home by Meredith Prentice.

“She waltzed in with her princess attitude and won everybody in seconds. She was fabulous. Quite a few had never met a greyhound before, so they were amazed at the personality and nature of the breed.”

Polly is owned by Meredith’s partner, trainer Gordon Yates. In her racing career she notched up 15 wins from 44 starts but since January 2022 she’s been taking the idea of retirement very seriously.

During the visit there was one very special moment for Polly that created tears of joy for many; including staff and visitors. She was introduced to resident, and former greyhound trainer, Des Stone.

Meredith explains “It was particularly poignant with Des being a retired trainer and suffering dementia. Even though his lucid moments were hard to catch, he did get a huge buzz out of having a greyhound on the lead once again. He hadn’t forgotten how to handle a greyhound!”

She said Des’ family was touched by his recall. “It was a great moment for his adult children seeing their dad’s eyes light up when she walked in.”

Meredith assures us further visits are pending. “I have a couple of retired dogs including one big goof who failed his GAP assessment who will be visiting.  I may even take a dog who is currently racing, just to visit Des Stone.”
