Moraine Suzie has received the Victorian Stayer of the Year gong at the 2023 Victorian Greyhound Awards.

Prepared by Brendan Pursell, Moraine Suzie started the 2023/23 racing year with a third placing in the 2022 G1 National Distance Championship after winning the Victorian National Distance final.

The ‘staying Siren’ then left her opposition ‘sound asleep’, coming into the G1 Topgun Stayers as a reserve on opening night of the inaugural Dream Chasers Festival at The Meadows and claiming the $75,000 first prize.

Moraine Suzie also reached finals of the 2022 G1 Bold Trease (6th) and 2022 G3 Christmas Cheer (4th) prior to finishing runner-up in the 2023 G1 Zoom Top.

She then contested the 2023 G1 Sandown Cup (6th) before rounding out 12 months of staying excellence claiming a $75,000 winner’s cheque in the Listed Pink Diamond Champion Distance final at Warragul.

In all, Moraine Suzie snared 11 wins, three seconds and three thirds during the 2022/23 racing season.

CRITERIA GUIDELINES

The Victorian Stayer of the Year recognises outstanding performances by eligible greyhounds during the racing year (July 1 to June 30) over distances greater than 570 metres as voted by the Victorian Greyhound of the Year panel.

Peter Quilty has more than three decades of experience as assistant editor of Victorian Greyhound Weekly. He was editor of GRV monthly magazine The Adviser (2001-09) and owner/publisher of Australian Greyhound Monthly. He also served on the selection panel for the inaugural GRV ‘Hall of Fame’ inductees and for several years was an adjudicator on the Victorian GOTY. He’s also published greyhound racing yearbooks and wrote the ‘Bold Trease’ video script.
