Taking it slow on ‘Fast’ return

Megastar Wow She’s Fast is on the comeback trail.

But co-trainer Kel Greenough says, “it will be a long, slow process”.

Wow She’s Fast, who has amassed a world record $2,389,955 in prizemoney, hasn’t raced since tailing off in the Group 1 Sapphire Crown final at Sandown Park on May 18.

A triple G1 winner and dual The Phoenix champ, and winner of 20 races from 32 starts, Wow She’s Fast suffered a hock injury in her quest to secure back-to-back Sapphire Crowns.

“She sustained a slight bit of damage in that race,” Greenough said. “But we recently had a scan done and the bone has healed nicely in her left hind leg.

“There are a lot of bridges to cross and she’ll need to tick all the boxes.”

“We had thoughts whether we should go on or not with her racing career. However, we’ve decided to start with some free galloping – albeit we’ll adopt a stringent approach.”

Greenough added Wow She’s Fast “will have to be 100 per cent in every way before she goes back on a racetrack”.

“It’ll be a long, slow process building up her fitness at home. We don’t want to rush things.

“There are a lot of bridges to cross and she’ll need to tick all the boxes.”

Greenough hasn’t considered any specific event for the sport’s ‘wonder woman’ but says, “if she does come back, there’s still time for the Melbourne Cup”.

“Sportsbet have also asked if there’s any chance of having her race for them again in The Phoenix. But the odds are stacked against her going down those paths.”

And Greenough’s final words were, “if she shows any signs of soreness in that leg, she’ll be immediately retired”.

“We’ll pull the pin and that will be it!”
