‘Cousins’ chase sparkling Pink Diamond cash

Toolleen breeder-owner-trainer Greg Berry could be in the ‘money’ at Warragul on Friday night.

In fact, a best-case scenario of $172,500 – ‘how’s that’!

Berry has ‘cousins’ Money Owes and Wow How’s That chasing sparkling cash in separate Pink Diamond feature finals.

Money Owes (Box 6) will contest the $110,000 Listed Sportsbet Pink Diamond Champion Sprinter (460m) – Race 8, 9.32pm.

Wow How’s That (Box 6) will tackle the $110,000 Listed Sportsbet Pink Diamond Champion Short Course (400m) – Race 10, 10.12pm.

“He’ll be putting on the pressure and cutting across to the ‘fence’, so box six isn’t as bad as it looks.”

Both events carry a $75,000 first prize and $11,250 breeder bonuses.

Money Owes, who finished third in this year’s G2 Warragul Cup, is a $51 rank outsider, while Wow How’s That is an $81 bolter!

However, Berry retains a touch of optimism about his speedsters whose dams are litter sisters – Money Owes (Stars And Lights) and Wow How’s That (Space Alert). He acquired both brood matrons specifically for breeding purposes.

Berry says Money Owes (20 from 44) “needs a couple of steps to get going”.

“He’ll be putting on the pressure and cutting across to the ‘fence’, so box six isn’t as bad as it looks. And coming back a little in distance will suit him.”

Meanwhile, Wow How’s That (nine from 39) – named after Daryl Braithwaite’s hit single ‘Howzat’ when lead singer of Aussie rock/pop band Sherbert – is out to make amends from last year’s Pink Diamond.

At only his third start, he finished sixth in the Maiden Short Course final at Ballarat.

Berry says Wow How’s That, who has finished second at four of his past five starts, has “matured and learned how to race”.

“I like him out there in box six as he’ll stay out wide and if he gets some clear air, he’s a bit of a chance.

“He’s started to work out where the finish line is. But I reckon Silver Brute will brain them.”

Berry says the Pink Diamond concept is “fantastic, but the prizemoney could be shared around a bit better”.

“It could be better designed for the ‘battler’ in terms of unplaced prizemoney.”

And he adds that as a breeder, “I just love watching the pups grow and develop their own personalities”.

“You can’t beat the feeling of winning a race with a greyhound you’ve bred, own and train.

“But I’d be just as happy if Money Owes and Wow How’s That could run a place on Friday night.”
