Wow, she’s ready for Topgun!

A stunning Sandown Park trial has convinced co-trainer Kel Greenough that Wow She’s Fast is spot on ahead of her next appearance in the Group 1 Sportsbet Topgun at The Meadows on Saturday week, November 5.

A frightening thought indeed for the Victorian superstar’s rivals.

Wow She’s Fast was viewed as an ‘automatic’ selection in the Topgun field, which was announced last night (Tuesday), and the dual G1 winner was installed $2.50 favourite when Sportsbet’s market reopened.

Greenough gave Wow She’s Fast a brief break after a torrid run as odds-on favourite in the G1 Adelaide Cup on October 7, where she failed to beat a runner home, having smashed 2021 Topgun winner Aston Rupee’s Angle Park track record at her previous start, in the Match Race Challenge.

“Wow She’s Fast trialled 29.19sec, which told us she’s where we needed her to be.”

Brilliant winner of 15 of her 21 starts, Wow She’s Fast trialled at Sandown on Sunday, clocking a flying 29.19sec in less than ideal conditions.

Putting her time in perspective, NSW star French Martini, which broke The Gardens 515m track record in a heat of the G2 Black Top two starts ago (28.96sec) before winning the final, and then solo trialled in a flying 29.72sec at her first look at The Meadows, trialled 29.636sec earlier in the meeting.

French Martini is the $5 second elect in Topgun betting.

“Yes, she’s good,” Greenough said, in his trademark understated manner.

“She pulled up a bit jaded after Adelaide, so we gave her nine days off.

“I brought her back with a post-to-post at The Meadows and she was about four lengths off her brilliant best, but that was okay, considering she hadn’t had a run since Adelaide.

“Then she had her first ‘500’ at Sandown last Sunday. They’d turned over the track the week before and it was extremely windy conditions.

“She trialled after the last and went 29.19sec, which was a very nice run, and told us that she’s where we needed her to be.

“They were running straight into a head-wind out of the boxes and she went 5.15sec, but then she went 18.60sec down the back, with the wind behind her.

“She’s pulled up a treat and now we just need a draw and a bit of luck!”

WATCH: Topgun favourite WOW SHE’S FAST (B1) won the G1 Maturity Classic on July 23, clocking 29.84sec to improve her unbeaten record at The Meadows to three from three.

Wow She’s Fast is unbeaten in three sensational appearances at The Meadows, winning the inaugural The Phoenix last December in a scorching 29.66sec, going even faster in a heat of the G1 Maturity in July, posting 29.56sec, and then winning the final in 29.84sec.

Greenough is hoping to celebrate his second Topgun victory, having won the invitational showpiece in 2009 with Cindeen Shelby.

“It’s very hard to compare different eras,” Greenough said.

“The dogs are running faster now, so is it the dogs or is it the tracks?

“They both have similar habits, but Wow She’s Fast would be more brilliant down the back. That would be the only difference between them.”
