Gypsy Wyong lands first Group 1

Emerging Victorian stayer Gypsy Wyong ($6.60) is a Group 1 winner after taking out tonight’s TAB Topgun Stayers (725m) at The Meadows in unusual circumstances.

The $75,000 to-the-winner event looked a race in two in the home straight as well-backed duo Zac’s Entity ($4.40) and Stanley Road ($4.20) looked ready to assume control from front-running favourite Miss Ezmae ($3.80), however the pair tangled up at a crucial moment putting them both out of business.

Gypsy Wyong (Westmead Hawk x Dyna Gypsy), a female greyhound boasting rich international bloodlines with a strong Paul Wheeler influence, was bred by George Dailly and trained by Andrea Dailly.

Her modest winning time of 42.75sec matter little, as she scored by 1.5 lengths over NSW duo Zipping Niseko ($28.20) and Super Estrella ($12.90).

“I thought if she got into a nice spot early she was a big chance,” said handler Josh Formosa.

“She got blessed a little bit and we’ll take it. Hopefully that gives her a bit more confidence and she continues to grow.”

“She’ll probably head to the Bold Trease (heats) now and see how that pans out. We can always drop her back (in distance).”

The Group 1 Bold Trease heats and final will run at Sandown Park in conjunction with the TAB Melbourne Cup on November 19 & 26.

A greyhound who has shown plenty of versatility throughout her brief career, Gypsy Wyong has now amassed 14 wins from 25 starts.

This was her second group win after taking out the Group 3 Topcat Video Cup (725m) at The Meadows in September.

Remarkably, she has drawn Box 2 nine times in her career for eight wins.
