WA superstar to trump Vic heavyweights

Sunset Spitfire has won 14 of his 15 career starts, and tonight at Sandown Park The Watchdog expects the hotshot from WA to lower the colours of two of Victoria’s very best greyhounds – Equalizer and Tiggerlong Tonk.

Sandown will host eight Group 1 heats over the 515m trip this evening – 4 x Sapphire Crown heats (females) followed by 4 x Harrison Dawson heats (males) – with action to begin with Race 1 at 6.04pm to kick-start the club’s rich May Carnival.

Unbeaten in 14 starts his home state, Sunset Spitfire’s only defeat was when he last ventured to Victoria, on Boxing Day at The Meadows when unplaced in a heat of the G1 Silver Chief (525m).

The first two placegetters in each heat will qualify for their respective finals – both worth $100,000 to the winner – which will be run on Thursday 20 May in conjunction with heats of the G1 RSN Sandown Cup (715m).

The Watchdog says ? : WA megastar SUNSET SPITFIRE (2) is making his Sandown Park debut and I believe he is in the top three fastest chasers on the planet at present. He sizzled in a trial here last week and with natural improvement, he should be able to push the 29.10sec mark and that should see him figure prominently. EQUALIZER (5) is an excitement machine and although he will be spotting them a decent head start, he should be able to weave some magic and be ready to pounce as they turn for home. Group 1 hero TIGGERLONG TONK (6) continually does everything right in his races and I would expect him to be in the top three for most of the journey. It is hard to look past the top three, but if there is a boil over, it may come from FABRIOLA ZAD (4). He lit up the Meadows last week and he is racing with extreme confidence. Cannot wait to see this event unfold and the ‘Spitfire’ has the potential to be one of the best we have ever seen.

The Watchdog says : JUNK FOOD JUNKIE (2) has been beaten by PAY CALL (4) in her past two in Sydney, however tonight they meet on the former’s home turf and I expect our elect to turn the tables. From box two she should hold the early lead and they will have their work cut out trying to reel her in.

The Watchdog says ? : FERNANDO BLUEY (4) is one of the most reliable chasers in work and I expect him to pounce on the lead and score with ease. There is plenty of strength and value drawn inside and if they fill the placings, they can add some value to the dividend.

The Watchdog says ? : WA star and probably the best stayer in the land at present. He was brilliant in his first stint in Victoria, and I think he is stronger this time around. Will work hard to get past ‘Rambo’ but should have enough in the tank to hold on.
