The Meadows announces million dollar race

A new era in greyhound racing begins at The Meadows this December.

The Phoenix – The World’s Only Slot Race for Greyhounds

  • Eight slots
  • $75,000 per slot
  • $1,145,000 in prizemoney
  • $750,000 to the winner
  • Saturday 18 December 2021 at The Meadows

Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association (MGRA) CEO Ashley Baker joined GRV Chair Peita Duncan on tonight’s live Thrill of the Chase  broadcast on 7mate to announce the introduction of a ground-breaking new race.

Set to become the pinnacle event on the greyhound racing calendar, The Phoenix  is Victoria’s first ever million-dollar slot race.

The first race of its kind in greyhound racing, The Phoenix will see eight slots offered for $75,000 each. Slot owners then face the trepidatious task of deciding which greyhound will run on their behalf.

And you don’t have to own your own superstar greyhound to get involved in the action.

Slot owners can negotiate privately with greyhound owners and trainers, on-sell their slots for profit, or use them as promotional tools for businesses.

Whatever happens, there’s sure to be a huge amount of lively discussion surrounding the negotiations between slot owners and the announcements of the final field.

GRV Chair Peita Duncan commended The Meadows on the development of this sensational new race.

The Phoenix  is a great initiative by The Meadows and will showcase Victorian greyhound racing on the world stage,” Ms Duncan said.

“It will undoubtedly become an aspirational race in the calendar moving forward and one that will be life-changing for those involved.”

“The Phoenix will showcase greyhound racing on the world stage.”

MGRA CEO Ashley Baker also noted the excitement surrounding tonight’s announcement.

“Our industry is thriving at present and now is the right time to launch a race such as this,” Mr Baker said.

The Phoenix  is a game-changer and will no doubt capture the attention of racing fans around the world.”

“To be standing here launching a million-dollar race is a real privilege and a credit to all of those who have contributed to getting this proposal off the ground.”

“I thank Peita and Alan (Clayton – GRV CEO) and their terrific team of staff for the work they’ve done in assisting the MGRA to develop The Phoenix  and for having faith in the concept.”

“I cannot wait to showcase the best that greyhound racing has to offer come December, and hopefully change the course of somebody’s life with that $750,000 first prize cheque.”

“December is traditionally a time at The Meadows where we see crowds flocking to the track to celebrate with their friends and co-workers.”

“When we were looking to integrate The Phoenix  into the racing calendar, we knew this was the ideal time to showcase all that greyhound racing has to offer to a huge audience with a blockbuster event.”

The final race details and conditions will be released in the coming months.
