Hooked On Scotch to contest the 20th Stan Lake Memorial

By Philippa Lavery

Tonight is the Group 2 TAB Warrnambool Cup Final, the flagship sprint event of the Warrnambool Greyhound Racing Club.

The second major race of the night will be the Stan Lake Memorial, which is named after a man who dedicated 60 odd years of his life to the greyhound racing industry in Victoria.

Over the course of this time Stan Lake was a Warrnambool GRC Committee Member for an astonishing 52 years and Warrnambool GRC President for 13 years.

Outside of his accolades, Stan was also well known for his jovial personality as his daughter Maureen Drennan describes; “He was always full of fun and fair. Fair but firm. But he was always friendly. He always had a story to tell.”

With 2020 marking the twentieth year of the race named in his honour, Maureen and her family are very grateful that Stan’s memory lives on.

“The race is very special to us. Greyhounds were part of our whole family’s lives, especially my dad’s. The younger people may not remember my dad I suppose, but there still are people at the club who would,” Maureen said.

“Our whole family have history with the club and it’s always been more of a family than a workplace.”

Headlining tonight’s Stan Lake Memorial is returning star Hooked On Scotch who is back after four months on the lines.

Hear what Hooked On Scotch’s trainer Jason Thompson had to say on RSN’s Off The Leash about his return.
