No Wonder

Mepunga Wonder did everything right after a tardy start in the $7,000 Jan Wilson Memorial at Horsham on Saturday night to win in a thrilling finish for Anakie trainer Jeff Britton.

Handled by Steve Menegazzo, Mepunga Wonder uncharacteristically missed the start but was able to manoeuvre through the field to claim the 485 metre feature.

“I think he did great to get to the front from the position he found him in out of the boxes,” trainer Jeff Britton said.

Although Mepunga Wonder put the win on the board, he may have been slightly upstaged by veteran El Grand Knocka’s eye catching performance in start number 137 (27 wins and 56 minor placings).

El Grand Knocka is over two years Mepunga Wonders senor.

Mepunga Wonder’s win in the Jan Wilson Memorial was his 11th victory in 28 career starts.

“I think I will head back to Geelong with Mepunga Wonder and then hopefully onto the Warrnambool Cup heats.

Jeff’s Saturday night success didn’t end with Mepunga Wonder, kennel mate Mepunga Royal picked up a win at the same track as well as Speadhead claiming victory at The Meadows.

Watch: Mepunga Wonder win the Jan Wilson Memorial in a thrilling finish at Horsham from box three.
