Hard box? Not for Winnie

Box five holds no fears for trainer Paul Bartolo ahead of Saturday night’s $300,000 to-the-winner Group 1 TAB Australian Cup Final (525m) at The Meadows.

Bartolo will rug $7 chance Hardaway Winnie, who is in career-best form with three straight wins including a slick 29.78sec heat win, the third fastest among the eight heats.

Box five has been the worst performed draw over 525m at The Meadows in the past 12 months, but it holds no fears for the Little River trainer.

“I actually wanted box five believe it or not because she runs in a straight line out of the boxes so we are very happy with the draw,” Bartolo said.

“I believe she will get the room she wants towards the inside of the track because Last Hurrah (box 4) looks towards the fence.”

“She seems to thrive off a big crowd also. She reminds me a lot of Betty’s Angel.”
Bartolo won the Melbourne Cup with Betty’s Angel in 2006.
