Cranbourne sizzle

David Burnett has Snags McKenzie engaged in the $50,000-to-the-winner Group 2 Backmans Greyhound Supplies Cranbourne Cup final (520m) on Saturday night.

“He’s due to ‘snag’ a group race soon,” Burnett quipped, in reference to four previous attempts at ‘black type’ honours.

“He’s 100 per cent ready, but the wide draw (Box 6) is probably not ideal,” Burnett said. “He’ll need a bit of room early, but if he runs up to his recent 29.29sec win at Sandown he’ll be very competitive.”

Bred, owned and trained by Burnett, Snags McKenzie (Nov ’16 Magic Sprite x Boston Silver) has raced on 52 occasions for 16 wins, seven seconds and 10 thirds, with $89,670 in prize money.

He’s been a finalist in the G1 Gold Bullion, G2 Ballarat Cup, G3 Cup Night Sprint (2nd to Simon Told Helen) and G3 Golden Ticket. He also made last year’s G2 Geelong Gold Cup final but was scratched after pulling off a toenail on the way to the track.
