Trainer Jason Thompson says he’s happy with the way star sprinter Flynn is going, but adds that he’s drawn a tough Group 2 Cranbourne Cup heat (520m) on Saturday night.
“Any runner in his heat would be a worthy finalist,” Thompson said. “It’s not a great draw (Box 4) and he’ll need to do everything right, in my book, to get himself into the final.”
Assessed as a $3.40 chance in heat five, Flynn is pitted against speedsters the ilk of G1 Melbourne Cup runner-up Western Envoy (Box 5) at $2.20 favourite, and dual G1 winner Barooga Brett (Box 8) who is quoted at $7.50.
WATCH: Flynn (1) win a heat of last year’s G1 Melbourne Cup.
Flynn, who was transferred to Thompson in late October last year, has raced on 29 occasions for 13 wins and five placings. He has contested four group race finals – including last year’s G1 Melbourne Cup and G1 Harrison-Dawson – and won last year’s G3 Bill Collins Speed Star (from box four) defeating NSW megastar Feral Franky.
Thompson also has rising star Submission (Box 1) engaged in heat one.
Quoted at the prohibitive odds of $1.40 favourite, Submission has won eight races from 19 starts. She was a finalist in last year’s G3 SA Oaks won by Oakvale Beauty.
“She’s got the perfect draw and not as strong a heat as what Flynn is in,” Thompson said… “I haven’t had her all that long but she’s going very well.”
Thompson added that the lightly raced Submission has a “hell of a lot of ability”. “She’s one that could sneak up on them in this class.”
