Sister act performs in Northern Districts Cup

Swift Current has edged out litter sister Extra Speed in the Group 3 Northern Districts Cup tonight (450m), taking home a first prize of $25,000.

The daughters of Fabregas and Speed Lane produced a quinella for local trainer Michael Carter, who bred, owns and trains the talented duo.

Heading into the final, Carter said little separated the pair, and as it turned out the final margin was just half a length as Swift Current stopped the clock at a slick 25.22sec. Cursed ($3.30Fav) was two lengths further adrift in third place.

“Over the first 20 metres Extra Speed is as quick as they come, while Swift Current is probably quicker from 50 to 100 metres,” Carter said heading into the final, and he was on the money as Extra Speed led early before being run down in the home straight.

Swift Current, who was the fastest heat winner by just .01sec, paid $4.50 for the win as she notched her fourth victory from 11 starts.

“It is good when you breed and rear the greyhounds yourself and put all the hard work in. The only time she was away from my kennels was when she was broken in by David Knocker,” Carter said.

“To be a local winning this race is great, and to have the first across the line is awesome.”

The Northern Districts Cup is open only to greyhounds bred in Victoria with no full-stakes city wins, with less than $25,000 in prize money and who have raced at Shepparton at least two times previously.
