Nothing mythical about Pegasus

Vic’s went one, two and three in the South Australian Derby last night at Angle Park with Mepunga Pegasus coming out on top in a showcase of strength and determination.

Fastest qualifier and $1.90 favourite Curt Lee finished second, while Weblec King finished third to round out the placings in the 2019 SA Derby.

Jasper The Jet and Curt Lee set the pace in the early stages of the race but the Jeff Britton trained Mepunga Pegasus was too strong for the leading duo stopping the clock in a best of the night 29.52sec.

Bred by Barry Smith, the son of Barcia Bale and Mepunga Hayley has developed a love affair with Sandown Park in his short 12 start career, with four of his five victories recorded on the 515-metre circuit.

Unlike Ashlee Terry’s efforts last year, Vic’s couldn’t pick up the SA Derby and Oaks double.

Mepunga Maggie for Jeff Britton was the $3 favourite heading into the 2019 Group 3 SA Oaks but wasn’t able to get in a favourable position early, leaving the race open for local Oakvale Beauty to claim her first Group race.
