THURSDAY THOUGHT – SLIPSTREAM

Buoyed by his recent success with Myrniong And All in the Group 3 Healesville Cup, Anthony Azzopardi has a classy two-pronged attack at Sandown Park tonight.

Based at Myrniong, Azzopardi will rug Slipstream (Race 2, Box 8) and Fernando’s Riot (Race 8, Box 4), both of which are The Watchdog’s top selections in their respective events.

Slipstream’s rivals were caught in his ‘slipstream’ when he snared a Mixed 6/7 heat over 515 metres at Sandown Park last week. The superbly bred speedster (Barcia Bale x Nicki Fields) clocked a slick 29.57sec in notching his second win from only four starts.

And he appears well suited from the ‘pink’ alley in the final, as his other win came from the same draw – at The Meadows (525m) in 30.38sec.

Later in the program, Fernando’s Riot – who is chasing his fifth win from his past six starts – lines up in a Grade 4 (515m).

A model of consistency, Fernando’s Riot has registered 11 wins, four seconds and four thirds from 25 starts. He finished third in this year’s Group 3 Flying Amy Classic (520m) at Albion Park in Brisbane.

The versatile type is also undefeated from two starts over Sandown Park’s sprint trip – 29.74sec and 29.81sec – and boasts 34.23sec and 34.27sec victories over this track’s 595m middle distance.

Check out Slipstream’s 29.57sec win (from two) at Sandown Park last week:
