19-month-pup shocks seasoned Vics in Mount Gambier Cup

A huge upset occurred in Sunday’s Mount Gambier Cup (512m) with 19-month-old SA youngster Galactic Athena ($7.70) scoring a come-from-behind win over Victorian star Slingshot Hammer ($1.70Fav).

Slingshot Hammer, winner of the 2018 Cranbourne Classic and with more than $100,000 in prize money to his name, was the fastest Mount Gambier Cup heat winner in 29.45sec.

Exiting box one in the final, he looked to have the race parcelled up after jumping straight to the front and opening up a comfortable lead, however Galactic Athena (Stephen Bartholomew), in just her sixth career start (four wins), stormed home to score in 29.43sec.

Four Victorian greyhounds contested the final, finishing second (Slingshot Hammer – Robert Camilleri), third (Pure White Evil – Andrew Paraskevas), fourth (Aston It Is – Paul Abela) and fifth (Cavatron – Paul Abela).

Galactic Athena (Paddy Whacker – Galactic Rumball) collected a $15,000 first prize.
