Italian Plastic the outside chance

By Renn Barker

Trainer Harry Manolitsis has every reason to be happy with the box draw ahead of Saturday night’s Group 2 CHS Group Horsham Cup Final (485m).

That’s because Italian Plastic, his contender for the 2019 Horsham Cup, has now won six times from seven starts out of the pink alley, including his Horsham Cup heat where he beat dual Group 1 winner Barooga Brett by two lengths. And Italian Plastic has now drawn Box 8 for tomorrow’s Horsham Cup final, currently a $4 chance with tab.com.au, just behind favourites Orson Allen ($2.70) and Nervous An Weird ($3.60).

Sired by Cosmic Rumble out of Dewana Savanna, the three-year-old black dog has now won nearly $80,000 in prize money to go with 22 wins and 15 placings from 45 starts, including wins at The Meadows and Sandown, but he has yet to win at group level.

Speaking with Simone Fisher for grv.org.au, Harry said wide draws give Italian Plastic some early galloping room and that his star shows a lot of speed when he hits the ground.

“I was thinking it would be lovely if he drew one of the outside boxes in the final, so he could be left alone out wide for 30 or 40 metres and that’s what’s happened,” Harry said. “He had never seen Horsham until last week, but I was quite happy with the way he went in his heat and he pulled up very well afterwards.”

Italian Plastic recorded the second fastest Horsham Cup heat time of 27.18 seconds on Tuesday, four lengths inferior to Orson Allen.
