Collins hunting Geelong Gold Cup

Dyna Hunter has set the time standard in the 2018 Group 2 Pet Panels Geelong Gold Cup after a sizzling 25.213sec heat win on Friday night.

Trained by former local-turned-Pearcedale resident Steven Collins – Dyna Hunter was headed by the speedy Aston Dinnigan in heat four before taking a commanding lead to win by more than six lengths.

Aston Dinningan finished in second position, while Ice Cool Kaedyn rounded out the placings.

“I thought he would be setting some nice sectionals in his heat tonight,” Steven’s son, handler Jake Collins (pictured) said.

“He is a fast little dog and he is just starting to prove his strength every week.”

Dyna Hunter has drawn box eight in Friday night’s Group 2 Geelong Gold Cup, a draw that he is unbeaten in six starts from.

“The eight will suit him because he likes to work across and he can get his feet on the ground but there is a lot of speed in this Geelong Cup.”

Speed there certainly is – Emerald Rainbow clocked a first sectional of 6.40sec in his 25.551sec Geelong Cup heat win while Speed Star shone with her 6.39, 25.484sec win in heat seven.

Three-time Group race contender Orson Allen also impressed in his heat win from box five, sailing home to win by more than eight lengths in a time of 25.298sec – the second fastest qualifying time.

“Orson Allen is drawn perfectly in box two and I think he is going to be hard to beat,” Collins said.
