PREVIEW: Kodiak looking to prove himself

The Northern Districts Cup has quickly developed into a highly sought after country race and tonight’s feature is no exception.
Here are my thoughts on the final…

Proven Kodiak (Box 4) was beaten in his heat on Monday after he suffered interference early thanks to a poor beginning. The fact he was able to get so close to Hone In was astounding in itself and he will only need a clear passage early to feature prominently here. He was low flying prior to his heat and I expect him to bounce back here. Even though he is drawn awkwardly I think getting away from Box 4, where he tends to be slow away, is a key and I think he will be too good.

Aston Kody (box 6) went exceptionally well in his heat, running 25.46sec winning very easily. Last week he was able to utilize the inside draw to his advantage so I think he will find box 6 a little tougher on tonight. If the favourite finds any trouble this guy will certainly be a chance of causing an upset.

Bear’s Gold (box 7) is a tremendous short course sprinter who has quickly developed a stunning record. He won his heat but I didn’t find him overly impressive. If there is a query with him it will be the last 50 metres of his race and in this class it might prove a telling factor.

Eddie Yap (box 3) I think is the value in the race. He is fast early and I expect him to be the early leader. He is a concern over the distance but if he can repeat his performance of his heat win, I think he is a terrific each way chance (replay).
