Northern Districts Cup: Bear wins gold

Bear’s Gold (pictured) has held off $2.60 favourite Proven Kodiak to take out the biggest race of his career, the 2016 Northern Districts Cup at Shepparton tonight.

Starting from box 7, Bear’s Gold was slow to begin but used the outside of the track to close the gap between himself and leader Eddie Yap (box 3).

Proven Kodiak was just 0.31 lengths off what could have been one of the most exciting Northern Districts Cup victories, but Bear’s Gold held on to win the $35,500 feature in a time of 25.61sec.

The son of Cape Hawke and Rustic Reeta, who is trained by Keith Hellmuth, has won seven times in his 11 start career, finishing second in three others events.
