Young trainer Mark Giddings set the tone for a Victorian domination at Sydney’s Wentworth Park last night with Lioness Lulu ($24.00) causing a boil over in the first race on the card, a heat of the Group 1 Association Cup (720m).

Victorian-trained greyhounds went on to win the first six races on the card, including all three Association Cup heats plus three of the four semi-finals of the rich Group 1 Golden Easter Egg (520m) series.

Giddings, just 22 and of Toolleen, was having his first interstate venture as a greyhound trainer and Lioness Lulu (whom he is pictured with above) entered the race with just four wins from 56 career starts.

However, her recent rise to prominence has come about since stepping up to staying ranks, having run third in the Group 1 Superstayers (725m) at The Meadows on Australian Cup night earlier this month.

“This was her first look at Wentworth Park and her first time having such a long drive in the car, so I was very pleased with her performance without being too surprised. She chased her heart out and is getting stronger with every run having only had a handful of starts over the long distance now,” Giddings said.

The finals of the $343,750 Group 1 Golden Easter Egg (520m) and the $103,125 Group 1 Association Cup (720m) will be held at Wentworth Park on Saturday night, 26 March.
