North-East Wrap: Stars Tune Up for the Healesville Cup

Welcome along to this week’s edition of the North-East Wrap. It was a pretty quiet week as we start the countdown toward the Healesville Cup, which kicks off with the heats this Sunday.

With no Bendigo meeting last Friday the week in the North East began at Healesville on Sunday. Here we saw a number of top quality Greyhounds having their final hit outs prior to the Healesville Cup heats this Sunday.

Race 6 was the first of those races and we saw a fantastic race between Light Em Up and Breathing Fire. Both of these dogs looks set for very promising careers and it was no surprise to see them start the dominant two in betting. As it turned out Light Em Up won the battle this time, but I think you will see these two doing battle with each other over the next few months.

Race 8 saw Country Cups King Ronray Spirit engaged and he took on the straight track specialist in Soldier Spy. Ronray Spirit started a short priced favourite but was no match at all for Soldier Spy, who did it all the way with Ronray Spirit fading late to miss a place. Both greyhounds will feature in the Cup Heats this Sunday.

Monday Night we headed to Shepparton for a good program headlined by the GRV Vic Bred Final for Grade 5 dogs over the 450. Favourite here was Absolute Silence, who had won 5 of his 7 starts. Outside of him it was a pretty wide open race. When the lids opened Absolute Silence missed it slightly and, from that point, he wasn’t ever really a winning chance. Like in their heat the week prior, the race was fought out by White Spyro, who led early doors, and Dynamo’s Gift, who stalked it. It was a case of Déjà vu as Dynamos Gift for Drysdale trainer Ron Darby ran down White Spyro late to score a strong win (Replay).

Other winners of note included the George Kantzidis trained Tron Ghan, who bolted in the first. Fantastic Pete, who is now two from two in Victoria after he won Race 5, and in Race 7 Ultima Bale might be getting back near his best form as he was a very strong winner here flying late to win in the last stride..
