When Matt Longridge had a weekend off from footy last weekend, he never imagined his Saturday morning would eventually wind up in him owning a share in a greyhound.

Longridge, a passionate member of both the Creswick Football and Cricket Clubs, was enjoying a Saturday morning off with a bye from footy when he won the Off the Bench Dr Who Survivor Quiz on radio.

The win earns him a 10 per cent share in a greyhound, as part of one of Craig Hutchison, Liam Pickering or Dr Turf’s greyhound ownership syndicate on the program.

Longridge, who has never owned a greyhound before, said he was thrilled to become an owner of a racing greyhound.

“To have a dog will be something different and will be great,” Longridge said.

“I’m really looking forward to it.

“I’ve never thought about owning one myself. I’ve owned a percentage in a horse before … I just had a one per cent share in this thing, but it never really went that well, so I’m hoping we can have some more luck with the greyhound.”

The 25-year-old plumber answered question 10 correctly on the Off the Bench program on Saturday morning to be the seventh winner of a 10 per cent share in a greyhound so far this year.

“It was a good bit of fun (on Saturday morning),” Longridge said.

He was offered two premiership club AFL tickets from Hutchison as a sweetener to join his syndicate – something Longridge couldn’t refuse!

“It was excellent to get one and getting the bribe from Hutchy to be in his syndicate was clearly the sealer,” he laughed.

“I follow the greyhounds, and I’ve probably lost a little bit of money on them over the years, but I’ve never owned one myself,” Longridge said.

“I’ve got a couple of mates who I play footy with who own a couple, and they race them around Ballarat.

“They absolutely love it and have won some money with them as well, so it will be great to go up against them hopefully for a few bragging rights.”
