Western District Review: Cannon Call Sprint

WESTERN Victoria has yet again produced a quality week of greyhound racing, with the highlight of the week being the conclusion of the $14,500 Cannonball Sprint at Geelong.

Taken out by outsider Call Me Hank in a solid 22.48sec, the race was a true indication of the balance of talent within country racing – with fellow outsider Mighty Sprite running second after an exciting run behind race favourite Governor Bale in his heat last week.

Coming from behind to salute, Call Me Hank managed to capitalise on an inside position entering the home straight and was just able to shoot and score over the top of Mighty Sprite, who was valiant in defeat yet again. With first and second paying around $12.70 and $19.70 for the win, punters who decided to take a leap of faith in backing these two greyhounds will have been laughing all the way to the bank.

Earlier on in the week, Soda Man lit the track alight at Horsham – taking out the first heat of the GRV To The City Distance race. Jumping from box four, he scored in an emphatic 32.80 over the 570 metres – and will now wrestle against the astute Seeking Justice for the prizemoney on Saturday night at The Meadows (Formguide).

In the shorter form of the GRV To The City heats, contested over the 480 metres, Joe Borg was successful in both heats – with kennelmates Triple Lindy and Memphis Jookin’ taking out both heats in 27.52sec and 27.32sec (Replay) respectively.

Last week, Ballarat moved back into its traditional Wednesday night timeslot and kicked it off with the beginning of their leg of the GRV VBIS Maiden series.

Saluting in a rapid 25.39sec, Kelly Bravo’s Hard Bargain was the quickest of the heats, followed closely by Mafalda Hopkirk in heat number one, who scored emphatically in 25.47sec. The first round of heats suggests that this week’s semi-finals will be just as exciting (Formguide).

That was greyhound racing in western Victoria last week, I hope you can pick a winner or twelve this week!
