Phenomenal Start To Classic

FAST TIMES ON MENU ON OPENING NIGHT AT WARRNAMBOOL
Phenomenal (Collision x Tocsin) is a track record holder once again after he ran a sensational 24.83sec over the 450m distance in a heat of the Group 2 Macey’s Bistro Warrnambool Classic on Tuesday night.

Two weeks ago the Jason Thompson-trained speed sensation had two track records stolen from him in the space of just 24 hours by champion greyhounds Xylia Allen (Horsham 570m) and Black Magic Opal (Ballarat 450m).

Phenomenal’s win last night lowered the previous record at Warrnambool of 24.85sec, which was set last month by Walk Hard.

Ten heats of the Warrnambool Classic were run last night, with another five to follow tonight.

All first and second placegetters plus the two fastest thirds will qualify for the semi-finals on 23 April, with the $75,000 to-the-winner final to be run on Warrnambool Cup night (30 April).

Lara’s Darren Brown took training honours last night, winning three of the 10 heats, while Brooke Ennis and Chris Johannsen both had doubles.

One of the surprise packets of the night was Full Of Grace (El Grand Senor x Catch Up Sunday), who scored her fifth win from 10 starts in the flying time of 25.07sec, which was the third quickest of the night behind Phenomenal and Dream It (25.01sec).

While not surprised at Full Of Grace’s fast time, trainer Peter Craig was extremely pleased by the performance of his 25 month old greyhound.

“I bred her and like everyone with greyhounds in this series it is something you plan for a long way out, so I’m delighted that she has made it through to next week’s semis,” he said.

“She is a very quick greyhound, as she ran within three lengths of the 390m track record on debut at Warrnambool and she broke Cranbourne’s 311m track record in a trial a few weeks ago running 17.48sec.”

Craig, who manages two golf courses in Cranbourne, assumed the role of President of the National Coursing Association in November after a stint as Vice President.
