BATE’S TOPGUN

Champion trainer captures quinella; destroys hoodoo

Boom sprinter Allen Harper delivered trainer Graeme Bate his first victory in the race that has eluded him for 18 years on Saturday night.

The $125,000 to-the-winner Topgun is the only major Group 1 that Bate was yet to win, however the champion trainer from Lara not only snared the prestigious event this time around, he also claimed the quinella as his ageing superstar Radley Bale ran second.

The two favourites Kilty Lad and Radley Bale flew to the early lead, before Radley Bale and Allen Harper hit the first turn together out in front.

From there Allen Harper took over, exploding away to lead comfortably down the back straight before going on to win by four lengths.

He won in the blistering time of 29.81sec, with Queenslander Bogie King finished third.
