The Meadows 600-metre track record holder Caco Magic is back in the winner’s circle after spending seven months on the sidelines.

Three starts into his return from injury, Caco Magic produced an eye-catching victory at Bendigo on Friday, stopping the clock in a best-of-the-day 28.02 seconds over 500 metres.

“It has been a long journey to get him racing again, but we are very glad he is back,” owner, trainer and breeder Stefano Cassar said.

“He has been trialling as good as ever, so we are very glad he was able to put it into a race as well.”

Caco Magic spent seven months away from the track after sustaining an injury to his stopper bone, which required surgery from highly regarded greyhound veterinarian Dr Des Fegan.

“Huge thanks to Des. He took the chips out and guided us through the rehab,” Cassar said.

Caco Magic burst onto the scene during last year’s Dream Chasers festival, producing a stunning 33.91 second performance on Phoenix night to break The Meadows 600-metre track record.

Caco Magic wins at Bendigo from box eight in a time of 28.02 seconds over the 500 metres. 

The performance attracted plenty of attention, with Cassar receiving a sizeable six-figure offer for his emerging star.

Caco Magic later headed to Sale for the Group 1 Sale Cup, where he finished seventh behind Without A Trace.

Now, after a lengthy road back to racing, Cassar is preparing to step Caco Magic back up to the 600 metre distance with bigger targets on the horizon.

“600 metres is where he does the best racing,” Cassar said.

And with another Dream Chasers festival approaching, Cassar didn’t rule out Caco Magic having another crack at the record that put his name up in lights.
