Peter Craig’s remarkable contribution to greyhound racing and coursing has been recognised with one of Victorian greyhound racing’s highest honours, the Ken Carr Medal.

Craig was presented with the prestigious award at the Victorian Greyhound Awards on Friday night, recognising decades of leadership, mentorship, advocacy and success across almost every facet of the sport.

Long-time friend and fellow trainer, Heather Villinger said it was Craig’s ability to succeed across so many different areas that set him apart.

“He’s just one of those people that has a lot of knowledge, but not just in one element of our sport – breeding, whelping, rearing, racing, coursing,” Villinger said.

“He’s been successful, and he’s been prepared to share all the knowledge that he has.”

Craig’s record speaks for itself.

A former President of the National Coursing Association of Victoria for more than a decade, Craig was instrumental behind the resurgence of coursing in the state.

His passion for coursing has also translated into considerable success, with Craig a three-time winner of the prestigious Waterloo Cup.

He has previously received the Noel Banks Medal – coursing’s equivalent of the Ken Carr Medal – and served as a member of the Industry Consultative Group.

Villinger believes Craig’s legacy will be defined not only by how much he won, but by the breadth of his contribution and the person behind those achievements.

“His legacy will be how successful he was, but not just in one element,” she said.

“He’s a true gentleman – a very decent, honest, kind person. He represents our industry.

“From the bottom of my heart, I couldn’t think of a better person to achieve this award.”
