Annual events the Western Districts Derby and Lil Dickie Oaks are set for Ballarat on Wednesday night.
The Derby, restricted to male greyhounds whelped on or after August 1 2023, is a race that’s been targeted and won by some states finest young sprinters for years.
Narrow favouritism sits with Sparring, who was the fastest qualifier and has won seven of his 16 career starts.
The early speed in the race is fierce and it’s going to be game on.
The Lil Dickie Oaks is an event for female greyhounds only (with conditions) with no heats scheduled and serves as the lead support act. It looks possibly more open than the Derby but it can produce a very handy sprinter as well – last year’s winner Sharapova Star being a prime example.
Mandy Mumma Shaw Memorial will also be run, named in honour of a popular participant who sadly passed away in 2020.
Another race of interest is the Vic Bred Maiden final, full of greyhounds we’re going to learn a lot more about quickly.
All in all, a card of high interest at the ‘Rat on Wednesday.
