BLOOD HOUNDS ON CASE

BLOOD from former racing greyhounds is saving the lives of hundreds of dogs each year and soon household pets could become donors, too. Galileo is one of the 60 greyhounds given a home, fed and exercised at the Canine Blood Bank at Melbourne University and, in return, supply 700 units of blood every year. The doggy donors help up to 1000 dogs who receive the blood transfusions every year. Despite the number of donors, the blood bank is running dry and head of the Department of Veterinary Science Prof Bruce Parry hopes to raise $50,000 to start a new project that will allow privately owned dogs to donate also.
