Minimum prize money for a standard metropolitan race is $5,280 (1st), $1,510 (2nd) & $760 (3rd), while minimum prize money for a provincial maiden race is $1,405 (1st), $400 (2nd) & $200 (3rd). Free For All events and finals at provincial meetings are $1,900 (1st), $550 (2nd) and $275 (3rd).
Total prize money in the state has risen to $52 million annually. Victoria boasts the most prestigious greyhound race in the world, the $630,000 Group 1 Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park, which is comprised of $435,000 (1st), $130,000 (2nd) & $65,000 (3rd).
It is becoming increasingly common for elite greyhounds to win in excess of $500,000 in prize money during their racing careers.
