Magpie Hector has stamped himself as one of the stars of the Sportsbet Australian Cup Carnival, completing a remarkable Group 1 double at The Meadows with victory in the Group 1 Sportsbet Fanta Bale Stayers.
Just three weeks after claiming the Group 1 Sportsbet Zoom Top, the powerful stayer again proved his class, overcoming a tough run to capture the $150,000 feature over 730 metres on Saturday night.
Trained in New South Wales by Jack Smith, Magpie Hector produced a performance full of grit and determination.
The son of Feral Franky and Foxy Bourbski missed the start and found himself at the rear of the field early before launching his run.
Forced three wide for the majority of the race, Magpie Hector steadily worked into contention before wearing down the leader Texas President in the closing stages.
Fellow New South Wales stayer Vodka And Ice loomed as a danger late, but Magpie Hector had already established the decisive break, surging to the line to secure victory in 42.66 seconds.
“It wasn’t an easy watch, but he was unbelievable,” trainer Jack Smith said.
“We have to pinch ourselves sometimes – we don’t take it for granted.”
Adding another layer of meaning to the triumph, Magpie Hector carries a special story behind his name.
The greyhound is named after a local from Forbes who is currently going through a difficult time, making Saturday night’s victory even more significant for those connected to the team.
