Firethorn scratched from Topgun Stayers

Another twist in Saturday night’s GROUP 1 Sportsbet Topgun Stayers has seen Firethorn scratched this morning after coming on season.

The one-eyed wonder – who only last night drew the coveted red rug in box one – was shaping as a genuine player in the eight-dog invitational for owner, breeder and trainer Mark Moroney.

Caretaker trainer Jason Thompson said the camp was understandably flat given how well she was trending toward the race.

“Off the draw and her trial indicated she was going to be a big player and it is a huge shame for connections,” Thompson said.

Firethorn had trialled strongly earlier in the week, and her rails draw had marked her as one of the most fascinating storylines stepping into the Dream Chasers Festival opener at The Meadows.

First reserve Irish Millie has also been scratched. Fade To Black is the remaining reserve and will get a start.
