$5 million upgrade for GAP Seymour

Greyhound Racing Victoria and the Victorian Government have announced a $5 million redevelopment of GRV’s Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) facility in Seymour.

Minister for Racing Anthony Carbines today confirmed a $3 million contribution from the Victorian Racing Industry Fund, with GRV investing a further $2 million to support the project.

The redevelopment will deliver modernised and expanded facilities, including upgraded veterinary operations, new exercise yards, an administration centre, and additional kennels—boosting capacity by 40.

Since 1996, GAP has been Australia’s largest greyhound rehoming agency, helping retired racing greyhounds transition from the track to loving homes. The Seymour site has served as the program’s main hub since 2003, supported by a smaller centre in Tullamarine.

Once complete in 2029, the upgraded facility will enable an additional 55 greyhounds to be adopted in its first year alone—giving even more dogs the chance to find their forever homes.

The investment builds on previous improvements at Seymour, including new day yards that provide ample space for greyhounds to play and exercise.

“We are backing Greyhound Racing Victoria to invest in the wellbeing and welfare of greyhounds at every stage of life, particularly as they transition from racing to retirement,” said Minister Carbines.

“Programs like this demonstrate our commitment to animal welfare—ensuring every retired racing greyhound is well cared for and given the best chance to thrive in their new home.”

GRV chair Tom Salom said the redevelopment reflects GRV’s ongoing commitment to greyhounds beyond their racing careers.

“This project will improve and expand our Seymour facility, ensuring retiring greyhounds enjoy the highest quality of life before being adopted into loving families,” Salom said.
