Pass Mark’s box seat in the Hawkswell

The newly-named Ron Hawkswell Cup (formerly the Topcat Video Cup) headlines Saturday night at The Meadows, attracting a decent field of stayers.

With just two heats last week, we’ve got a clear picture of the contenders and Pass Mark looks the one they’ll have to beat.

Last week’s heat was his first race over 700 metres since finishing 3rd in the Sandown Cup back in May, and connections expect him to strip fitter for the outing.

“Whether it be because of programming or soreness he hasn’t had a ‘700’ for a long time. He definitely needed that run last week and we think he’ll go better on Saturday,” part-owner Jarrod Sharp said.

As the fastest heat winner, any improvement only strengthens his claims. With little early speed drawn inside, he gets every chance to take control.

The market suggests New South Wales visitor Late Night News is a near equal chance, but he’s not firing on all cylinders at the moment and therefore under the odds.

The wildcard is Alakazam, who made his Victorian debut in the heats. He’ll need to lift significantly, but he’s the X-factor in the final.

Aside from that…

Race 5
A good race over 600m where we see Zig Zag Man – an absolute powerhouse from New South Wales who makes his Victorian debut.

Race 6
Bebop Jazz heads the Pat Haas Classic, a star sprinter who was magnificent last week.

Race 7
Australia’s best sprinter Explicit is the biggest name in the Free-For-All. His second visit to The Meadows since taking out The Phoenix.

Pass Mark (7) defeats Payback (8), Irish Millie (1) and Scotch Time (3) in Heat 2

Werris Bale (7) defeats If Only (4), Late Night News (1) and Alakazam (2) in Heat 1
