Group 1 success, 40 years in the making

Davide and Wendy Fasoli are gearing up for the biggest moment of their racing journey this Saturday night, when their promising chaser Amron Mick lines up in the prestigious $100,000 Group 1 Maturity Classic at The Meadows.

The couple has spent more than 40 years in the sport, but this will be their very first time contesting a Group 1 final.

“This is a dream come true,” Davide Fasoli said.

“There’s so much hard work and time that goes into these dogs. Just having the chance to be in a race like this – I’ll be forever grateful.”

Amron Mick will face off against some of the most exciting young greyhounds in the country, including the highly regarded Saquon. But the Fasoli’s are quietly confident their boy has what it takes to cause an upset.

Travelling from Heyfield to The Meadows is nothing new for the duo, who regularly make the six-hour round trip to Melbourne to race. But their recent journey to the track came with a few extra challenges.

“The freeway was closed, so we had to detour. There was a lot of stop-start driving, and I was a bit concerned how he’d handle it,” Davide said.

But Amron Mick put those worries to rest quickly, delivering a brilliant all-the-way win in his heat to book a spot in the final.

Amron Mick (2) leads all the way in his heat of the Maturity Classic in a time of 30.15 seconds over the 525 metres at The Meadows.

The Fasoli’s train a small but dedicated team of six greyhounds and only recently shifted their focus fully to racing after spending the past 25 years focusing on greyhound education.

Now, with Box 2 – the same draw he had in his heat win – Amron Mick will take on a hot field in what promises to be an electrifying contest.

“There’s still improvement to come with him,” Fasoli said.

“He’s had a bit of an interrupted beginning to his career, but he’s starting to hit his stride now.”

As the Fasoli’s edge closer to 50 years in the sport, they say this could be the most exciting chapter yet.

The Group 1 Maturity Classic is race 9 on Saturday night’s card at The Meadows, jumping at 9pm.
