Lady Wilson takes time honours in Sandown Cup heats

Lady Wilson was the fastest qualider in the heats of the Group 1 Sandown Cup tonight at Sandown Park.

Jeff Britton pulled out two outstanding training performances with the returns of Pass Mark and Mepunga Surprise.

But the story of the night may well be Warrnambool Miss Mary Jo, giving trainer Colin Kelly his first Group race runner.

Pass Mark kicked off the Sandown Cup heats with an impressive all the way win after two months on the sidelines.

Adding to the feat, Pass Mark stopped the clock in a personal best time of 41.59 seconds over the 715 metres at start number 60.

“That’s a fair training effort,” Sky Racing’s Nathan Rooney said.

“If it doesn’t flatten him, he only has to produce a run like that to be right in the Sandown Cup.”

Pass Mark (6) lead all the way to win over Double Denim (5) in a time of 41.59 seconds.

The heaven’s opened up for Mepunga Surprise in the second Sandown Cup heat, giving trainer Jeff Britton his second greyhound through to the Sandown Cup.

“There has been a lot of hard work to get her back to the track after an Achillies operation,” handler Craig Solkhon said post-race.

Mepunga Surprise has shown talent from the start, recording the eighth fastest maiden win at Sandown Park.

Mepunga Surprise (3) wins heat two of the Sandown Cup over Henry Intention (5) in a time of 41.95 seconds.

Interstate raider, Lady Wilson proved her trial last week was no fluke, with an eye-catching Sandown Cup heat win for trainer Sam Sultana.

Lady Wilson started her career in Victoria with her owner and breeder Brett McIntyre, making the move to New South Wales after start seven.

The Scott’s great run of form continues with Star Stay finishing second to score a rug in the Sandown Cup. A month ago, Lachie and Emma Scott hadn’t made a group race, now Star Stay is their third group race for the month.

“He has heaps of ability,” co-trainer Lachie Scott said.

“This is the first block of time we have been able to get 700 metre runs in him.”

“He is an interesting dog who has a few quirks.

Lady Wilson (7) claims heat three of the Sandown Cup over Star Stay (5) in a time of 41.54 seconds.

Monster upset in the final heat of the Sandown Cup, with Miss Mary Jo taking advantage of a bit of mischief out in front to rail through and claim her first 700 metre win in a heat in the Sandown Cup.

Trained in Warrnambool by Colin Kelly, Miss Mary Jo has had 49 career starts for 11 wins.

Crowd favourite Raider’s Guide also took advantage of trouble out front to make it through to another feature race.

“He went really well, but got very very lucky,” Carol Martin, daughter of trainer Gary Fahey said.

Miss Mary Jo (3) claims a shock win over Raider’s Guide (1) in a time of 42.01 seconds in the final heat of the Sandown Cup.
