Zarbo too zippy in Mount Gambier Cup

Strike rate queen Zipping Zarbo was finally rewarded for ultra-consistency with her first Group race win yesterday.

Prepared at Lara, the Deb Coleman-trained flier produced a customary frontrunning display to take home a $10,000 first prize in the Listed Mount Gambier Cup (512m) at Tara Raceway.

One of five Victorians in the final, Zipping Zarbo ($1.90F) catapulted from the ‘red’ alley and led all the way to defeat ‘journeyman’ Renewed ($23.00) by three-quarters of a length, with counterpart Fabriola Zad ($3.50) flying home for third, a further one length away in 29.56sec.

WATCH: Zipping Zarbo (1) employs catch-me-if-you-can tactics to claim yesterday’s Listed Mount Gambier Cup.

A Group 2 Warragul Cup finalist, Zipping Zarbo notched her 24th win, with 10 seconds and four thirds, from 50 starts. Her stakes lifted to $94,129.

For Coleman and partner Rob Camilleri it was a case of third time lucky in the event.

Two years ago, their odds-on favourite, Slingshot Hammer, was narrowly defeated by Galactic Athena. Then, last year’s winner, Sunset Milo, was transferred from their Lara kennels prior to the Cup to Adelaide owner Tim Aloisi in order to overcome border restrictions.

Zipping Zarbo (1) scores an all-the-way win over Renewed (3) and Fabriola Zad (2) in the Listed Mount Gambier Cup.

Zipping Zarbo was handled by 24-year-old Ricky Coleman who was full of praise for the April ’18 red fawn daughter of El Grand Senor x Zipping Abby.

“She’s been with us since pre-training and has always tried her heart out,” he said. “Winning the Cup was certainly a big thrill and we’re now looking to race here in Mount Gambier on a more regular basis.”
