The fears of rival trainers were confirmed when Bekim Bale [$1.80fav] won the Shootout at Sandown Park on Thursday night in the sizzling time of 29.14sec.
Beginning beautifully from box 5 in the four-dog field, Bekim Bale was hot on the hammer of early leader Cape Hawke [$7.50] throughout, before wearing him down rounding the first bend and cruising to a comfortable five lengths win.
The Jamie Ennis-trained Cape Hawke had clocked slick sections of 5.08sec and 18.75sec before Bekim Bale broke his spirit.
Cape Hawke tired toward the finish but hung on for third, with the experienced Radley Bale [$3.50] sneaking into second place.
The Graeme Bate-trained Allen Harper [$4.70] began moderately before continually running into the rear of his kennelmate Radley Bale throughout the race.
Trained by Andrea Dailly, Bekim Bale ran three lengths off his 28.96sec track record at Sandown Park.
The son of Bartrim Bale and Amelia Bale helped himself to a $40,000 winner-take-all prize.
