The greyhound racing industry continues to demonstrate its critical role in the Australasian economy, generating a gross value added (GVA) of $2.6 billion annually, according to the latest Greyhound Australasia Size & Scope study for 2022-23, completed by IER.
This impressive contribution includes $940 million in direct economic activity and an additional $1.66 billion in induced flow-on benefits, underscoring the industry’s far-reaching impact across the region.
Greyhound racing in Victoria is responsible for generating the largest economic contribution of any greyhound racing jurisdiction in Australasia, a total of $844.8 million – 41 per cent of which is in regional areas.
NSW sits second with an economic contribution of $809.9 million.
Victorian greyhound racing also sustains 4,843 full-time equivalent jobs, representing 8,886 roles in racing, and generates $450.3 million in household income.
Across Australasia, that full-time equivalent jobs sustained by greyhound racing activity close to 15,800.
The supplier network involved in greyhound racing is not just limited to trainers, breeders, kennel attendants and race staff – it also reaches veterinarians and transport companies, feed merchants, sand and soil suppliers, the construction and IT industries and equipment manufacturers.
