The greyhound community is in mourning after the passing of John Cohen, aged 83.

He passed away yesterday (Tuesday) after battles with illness in recent years.

He trained greyhounds for over 50 years and was a very popular participant.

“Johnny was a knockabout type of bloke who had many friends in the game. He loved nothing more than having a beer and a laugh,” said Neil Brown, Sandown Park Chairman.

Some of his best greyhounds were Disco Gambler (133s, 27 wins), Soldier Boy (132s, 24 wins) and Blue Success (182s, 18 wins).

John trained winners as far back as the 1960s and was assisted by his wife Mary and their family.

His legacy lives on through his daughter Vicki Nolan who is part of the Sandown Park board.

Funeral information will be added to this page in the coming days.
