Shepparton Cup heats: Rooney’s tips

Gun form expert Nathan Rooney has honed in on tonight’s heats of the Shepparton Cup. A combination of early speed and good draws has led to the below specials.

Hear his race-by-race previews throughout the night on RSN. The first race at Shepparton kicks off at 6.42pm with the opening Cup heat at 8pm. The winners and three fastest runner-ups will advance to Saturday night’s final.

Best: Race 9 (Heat 5), MATT LOCH (7)

He has returned in great form this preparation winning the Shepparton Classic in fast time (24.89sec), and he backed that up with a super Ballarat victory (24.81sec) last start when running blistering sectionals. He maps to lead again here from the wide draw, and from there he should prove hard to catch.

Next best: Race 6 (Heat 2), SHIMA SHADOW (8)

He’s ideally drawn out wide (four wins and four placings from box 8) and has been a multiple Group race finalist on one turn tracks. He should get a beautiful cart into the race with the faultless beginner and likely leader Riendo drawn in box 6, and from there I think he’ll attain a clear run down the outside and be too strong late.

Quaddie/Multi ‘Anchor’: Race 5 (Heat 1), EXPLICIT (7)

Some $1.90 was bet this morning – he’s now $1.45 and at a more realistic price! He’s a recent Group 1 winner and last start was runner up in the Horsham Cup. He looks perfectly placed in Heat 1 of the Shepparton Cup from the wide draw to explode straight to the top and from there he’s one of the hottest prospects in greyhound racing. He looks like an “anchor bet” for Quaddie players and multi punters.

Another fancy: Race 7 (Heat 3), HERE COMES MILLI (2)

This heat looks to be packed full of pace with Short And Stumpy (1) and Power Out (7) setting a high tempo out in front, but they are both susceptible at the end of 450m, which draws me to Here Comes Milli. She’s a genuine Free-For-All metropolitan sprinter who, with the inside draw, should be able to stalk the speed and if she can navigate the right path through the middle stages I think she’ll be too strong for the suspect leaders late.

Gamble responsibly
