Golden ‘Snitch’

The years go fast… “Like smoke through a keyhole”, as Edward Cole (Jack Nicholson) tells Carter Chambers (Morgan Freeman) in 2007 comedy/drama The Bucket List.

Which leads us to first-time greyhound owner Arlene Roy of Mount Samson in Queensland.

Arlene, who celebrated her 67th birthday on July 2, has her own things ‘to-do’.

Who knows whether it’s swimming with sharks, sky diving or seeing a Las Vegas show.

But we do know one item on her ‘bucket list’ courtesy of a heart-warming interview with SKY greyhound expert Jason Adams on the ‘Going Greyhounds’ segment of The Morning Line program.

“I have enjoyed these dogs so much… They are the most loving, caring, beautiful dogs.”

“I’m not sort of getting any younger in years and I decided that there were several things on my ‘bucket list’ that I needed to do,” Arlene said. “And one of them was to have a greyhound. I wanted to do something for me.”

Arlene had “no idea where to start”. So, she went onto the Brisbane GRC website.

“There was a big banner up the top saying ‘Sennachie at Stud’. “I went oh, this dog must be okay, so I called Steve White (Sennachie’s studmaster).”

Eventually, Arlene found a litter (Jun ’21 Sennachie x Fabwik) that “was the one for me” and adds, “the rest is history”.

Her daughter, Vanessa, also got involved and they went halves in two pups – one of them being Professor Snitch (seven wins from 10 starts), trained by Steve White, who registered the second-fastest Maturity Classic heat win (29.75sec) at The Meadows last Saturday night.

“Oh my god, Jason, it was just unbelievable, just unbelievable,” said Arlene of the heat victory. “I was gobsmacked, totally in awe.”

Arlene was at home watching the race with her husband and granddaughter with “a full cage of butterflies right around in my stomach”.

“I just screamed at her the whole way around. It was just a perfect race… She served up a masterclass.”

Arlene says acquiring Professor Snitch and her litter brother Professor Sirius is “the best thing I’ve ever done”.

“I have enjoyed these dogs so much… They are the most loving, caring, beautiful dogs.

“Snitch and Sirius, obviously that’s from Harry Potter – my granddaughter was responsible for that. I used to be a teacher, so it all ties in; it was meant to be.

“The professors are in Harry Potter, so that’s where ‘Professor’ (prefix) came from. And isn’t she a professor!”

The $100,000 to-the-winner Group 1 Maturity Classic final will be run on Saturday night and Arlene says, “there’s no way I’m not going to be there”.

“Yes, yes, yes, we’ll be there. My husband (Norm) and I are coming down.”

Arlene Roy is living the dream with Professor Snitch. Perhaps it’s time for her to ‘start up a personal blog’ about her latest ‘bucket list activity’.
