Kayla Cottrell on RSN

After working for two years as a stable hand for leading thoroughbred trainer, Mick Price, Kayla Cottrell decided it was time to grab the bull by the horns.

And it didn’t take long to land her first Group 1 victory, with Fernando Cazz taking out the Rookie Rebel (600m) at The Meadows on last Saturday’s opening night of the rich Australian Cup Carnival.

“I thought am I going to makes something of myself being a number for a big trainer or am I going to do it myself,” the 18-year-old trainer told RSN’s Gareth Hall on Monday.

The Pearcedale trailblazer now has her eyes set on a second Group 1, with Fernando Cazz and litter brother Fernando Bluey to almost certainly line up in this Saturday night’s heats of the Australian Cup.
