Australian Cup ‘revelation’: Rank outsider critical to favourite’s chances

A fascinating insight into the chances of TAB Australian Cup fancy Whiskey Riot has emerged, with concern the superstar greyhound won’t get things his own way in Saturday night’s $300,000 to-the-winner final at The Meadows.

$2.10 favourite Whiskey Riot is drawn in Box 8, with $34 rank outsider Scatterbox (Box 7) a real chance to cause the two-time Group 1 winner some grief according to their respective trainers.

“I actually feel sorry for Whiskey Riot (because) Scatterbox is going to cause him a bit of trouble,” Jeff Galea, trainer of Scatterbox, told RSN during the week.

“He (Scatterbox) always take one or two steps off (right) and then comes in (to the rail).”

WATCH: Scatterbox (2) steps right out of the boxes on his way to winning his Australian Cup heat.

Asked by RSN’s Gareth Hall whether Scatterbox might knock into Whiskey Riot heading into the first bend, Galea said “I’m pretty sure he will”.

Meanwhile, Whiskey Riot’s trainer Anthony Azzopardi shared Galea’s sentiments in a later interview on the station.

“We’ve got to rely on a lot of luck. Scatterbox might miss the kick but I doubt it because he’s a very consistent beginner.”

“(But) if he can just miss it by half a length I think Whiskey Riot can get in front of him cut him off.”

Whiskey Riot was the fastest heat winner by five lengths when clocking a near-track record 29.47sec in his heat last weekend.

The son of Fernando Bale will surpass $1million in prize money if he wins the Australian Cup.
